New Frontiers in Music:
Crossing Cultures, Blending Genres
with Uri Caine, Susie Ibarra, Vijay Iyer, Lei Liang, Ken Ueno, & David Virelles

Wednesday, January 13,2010
Caplan Center, Terra Building University Of The Arts
211 S. Broad Street, 17th Floor
Philadelphia, Pa 19107

The first part of Crossing Cultures, Blending Genres examined the work of three cutting-edge composers—Susie Ibarra, Ken Ueno, and Lei Liang—whose music synthesizes influences from their own backgrounds with myriad styles that are ever morphing and evolving in America—from symphonic and chamber music traditions to jazz, rock, electronics, and more. Panel moderated by Frank J. Oteri.

The afternoon's second panel featured three prominent jazz pianists—Uri Caine, Vijay Iyer, and David Virelles—whose work draws upon very different backgrounds and aesthetics. The panel demonstrated commonalities and differences among their ways of improvising and creating music, and discussed the artistic, cultural, and social implications of the ongoing cross-pollination of jazz with a vast range of other music. Panel moderated by Lara Pellegrinelli.
